The avi container dosen't support realy subtitles - I had the same problem  
before, I solve it using a prog I get from a user on this mailing list,  
that program will extrakt the subtitles to .ssa format witch mplayer can  
read

I also send you a bash script wich will convert the avi files to matroska  
(with subtitles) - DON'T USE THE SCRIPT without checking what is acculy  
does - it will remove the orginal .avi file and asume the audio is japanes  
and the subtitles are english. you will also need mkvtoolnix to convert  
the files to matroska:
