But is that the case with H264? At least, according to the
documentation at
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-x264.html:
The usefulness of B-frames is questionable in most other codecs
you may be used to. In H.264, this has changed: there are new
techniques and block types that are possible in B-frames.
Usually, even a naive B-frame choice algorithm can have a
significant PSNR benefit.
Are the ugly hacks you speak of required with mplayer, or in the x264
code?
