please search MPlayer-users history, I've seen similar topic last week. AFAIK 
reply to original poster was that it is not generally a good idea to enable 
audiofile autodetection. Just imagine you have filename.wav, filename.mp3 or 
filename.ogg (my case) in one directory, then which one should mplayer choose?
