The mplayer command above works  - it displays subtitles, on the screen.
So, OSD is all setup, and subtitles in mplayer work.

mencoder is where I've problems:
mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 27 -sid 0 -o title27.avi  -vf expand
-1:-1:-1:-1:1 -oac  copy  -ovc copy
That leaves out subtitles ....
