Next time you extract a tar better use the --no-same-owner
option.
And if that's a default install you used a IMHO crappy distribution.

chown -R user:group MPlayer-1.0pre6a
Alternatively as root do
rm -rf MPlayer-1.0pre6a
to delete the files and untar again as normal user but this time with --no-same-owner.
Anyway, this is not a MPlayer related problem, so maybe better ask at a
place that provides general linux help (finding a local linux user group
might be a rather good idea, too...).
