Found the Users Guide for my Riva.  it's a Riva TNT2/Vanta, apparently.

And it claims the overlay "features smooth up and down scaling with 
multitap X and Y sub-pixel interpolation"

So it should be able to do it, I guess.  Smoothly, even.
