I can't say if it works or not, as my entire experience with MythTV
consists of installing it one day, hating it completely, and
uninstalling it the next day.  However, with a quick search I've found
that, at least up to 1.0pre6, Gentoo ebuilds include a mythtv
patch applied to mplayer.  Perhaps it will work for you.
