[MPlayer-users] No subtitles without "rewinding"

I'm new at this, so sorry for any breaches of protocol.

When playing DVDs in the Criterion Collection of Kurosawa's films
(Japanese language with English subtitles), subtitles do not appear
(command used:  mplayer dvd://1 -slang en [or -sid 0, the sid found by
"mplayer dvd:// -identify"]).  If playback is "rewound" by a few seconds
(with the left arrow key), subtitles appear.  Using -ss 00:00:30 to
start playback beyond the first subtitles does not work - playback must
still be "rewound" before subtitles appear.  Importantly, mencoder does
not capture subtitles.  I've Googled and reviewed the last year of this
list's archives, but have not found the fix.    

Version of mplayer (downloaded today from rpm.greysector.net):
