which version of Mplayer for Win do you use?
There are several ones... I found

   http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php
(section [Precompiled Mplayer win32 GUI binaries] )

to be a very nice version (with GUI!). It plays media files including DVDs 
nicely on my Windows box.
