Taken from the MPlayer MAN pages:

        -slave
               This option switches on slave mode.  This is intended for 
use of
               MPlayer as a backend to other programs.  Instead of 
intercepting
               keyboard events, MPlayer will read simplistic command 
lines from
               its stdin.
