Well, on the one hand the drivers used to report that my GeForce2/MX
could do an Xv overlay of up to 2046x1536 whereas the hardware was
barely capable of anything wider than 1300 pixels, so it wouldn't be the
first time the drivers have 'lied' about a card's capabilities.

On the other hand, I think the later GeForce models were able to switch
the overlay so that it could run on either screen, regardless of whether
it was the primary display or not.  This might be why it reports Xv
being available on both screens - it *could* be used on either screen,
just not both at the same time.  Perhaps there's something 'locking' it
to your primary display (e.g. 3D acceleration) that makes it impossible
to switch over to the secondary display.  You could try loading X11
without any window manager to test this (startx -e bash)
