Doh... I guess I'll answer my own question.
-vf tfields=4

Temporal field separation - split fields into frames, doubling
the output framerate. Like the telecine filter, tfields will
only work properly with MEncoder, and only if both -fps and -of-
ps are set to the desired (double) framerate! Available modes

That is a little misleading, I thought it was only possible with
mencoder and not mplayer.
