Strange, then, that older version of mencoder were doing a good job of

Yes, it does seem to work with ffplay.
I would be more than happy to output mpeg1/2 video to an MPEG file
instead of AVI, but mencoder is strongly AVI-based, and the MPEG muxer
is rather limited.
Maybe I should be using ffmpeg instead :-)
