[MPlayer-users] Starting mplayer without specifying a file to play

AFAIK and from what I've read in the list, it doesn't look like it can 
be done. I also want to do it.

The best I've been able to manage using a frontend I'm writing (in 
python)  is always loop, so that the program does not exit. Maybe you 
could use a dummy clip and have it looping...
