[MPlayer-users] Suitable for authoring a dvd

I am trying to take some videos I own (VHS) and transfer them to DVDs.
Basically, I plugged a VCR into my TV card, and presto dub-o.
Anyhow... So now I can use mplayer to make nice DivX or whatever copies
of my VHS tapes. What I am curious about is how I could instead use
mplayer to create mpeg files suitable for running through dvdauthor, or
even m2v and mpa files to send through mplex and then dvdauthor. Can I
accomplish such a thing with mplayer/mencoder? If so, what might the
command line options look like? If not, any suggestions about where I
should continue my quest?
