see if the same thing still happens when running as root... vidix has
some stupid bugs in it that make it senselessly need root even if
you're using svgalib_helper to get around that. someday i need to get
around to committing my patches that fix it. but the bug is definitely
in the pci bus scan, so it might be your problem!
