I'm not sure, but it sounds like you have more incomming data, but no
more cache space, so it truncates the data, which, I guess, gives you an
EOF.

This could be worked around, however.  It shouldn't be too complicated
to make mplayer keep trying to read more data after an EOF, rather than
exiting.
