[MPlayer-users] subtitles format

hello,

i've found some subtitles files (sub or srt) that seem to have characters
intended for text format, like italics, for example.

i've seen things like {Y:i} or ¢Ü or whatever. AFAICT, mplayer does not
recognize this, and print those characters to the screen. i've googled
around quite a bit trying to find information about the format of srt and
sub files, but couldn't find anything relevant, really.

is there a way mplayer can recognize different formats for the text of
subtitles?

any known places where i could learn more about formatting text in
subtitles?

TIA,

lj
