may I suggest you to try encode2mpeg?
Download from:
    http://spazioinwind.libero.it/encode2mpeg/encode2mpeg-0.1.1.tar.bz2	
and use in this way:

    encode2mpeg -o FILM1 dvd://1 -aid 129 -avi
to encode at the _BEST QUALITY_ with very high video compression
and very high mp3 audio quality

or

    encode2mpeg -o FILM2 dvd://1 -aid 129 -avi -usesbr 5 -avisplit 700
to encode at the _BEST QUALITY_ with video compression necessary to put the
resulting avi on 2 CDROM and very high mp3 audio quality

or

    encode2mpeg -o FILM3 dvd://1 -aid 129 -avi -usesbr 2 -encode 3:3:3,128
to encode at the _BEST QUALITY_ with video compression necessary to put the
resulting avi on 1 CDROM and good (128 kbps) mp3 audio quality

More sophisticated options are available, but you can try with the suggested
one first.
