[MPlayer-users] subtitles and EDL

Many of my DVD's are foreign and therefore have translation subtitles.
occasionally I may find a mistranslation in the DVD subtitles and also happen
to know what the correct translation is. It would be nice to be able to tweak
the subtitles, so that future watchings of my DVDs contain the corrections.
Now while it's not possible to change the DVD's subtitles, I have been doing
some thinking about another way to go about it using mplayer's EDL support.
First I create a subtitle file with just the subtitles that I want to replace
existing ones, with their relitive timing information (should end up being a
really short file, unless I find a ton of lines to correct of course). Then I
would create an EDL file that toggles the DVD subtitles off during the periods
when my replacement subtitles will appear... except that currently mplayer's
EDL support does not have that toggle, but let's for now pretend it does and
continue on.
Now I would play the DVD with the DVD subtitles enabled and the subtitle file
active. As mplayer can do both sets of subtitles simultaneously, things should
go quite well, with my revised subtitles occationally appearing in place of a
DVD subtitle.
Is a way to do something like this using mplayer as it is now? If not, is
there a suggested way in the source to disable the DVD subtitles without
disabling the other subtitles. (changing sub_visibility via some additional EDL
code I've hacked in affects both sets of subtitled, and I'm not clearly seeing
a clean way to affect just the DVD ones. probably I just haven't studied the
source enough yet)
