[MPlayer-users] how to get length of a video without playing it?

When I play a video in mplayer, I can get the length
of the video.

But, how can I get the length of the video without
playing it or doing something that would take a lot of
CPU/memory?

Among other uses, this would let me write a script to
generate a list of my videos and their lengths.
