Hey Sascha,

Thanks for the timely response.  I guess I did leave out a vital piece 
of info didn't I.
The version is MPlayer 1.0pre4-3.2.2.  I have since been able to get the 
program up
and running.  There was no problem with the tarball but apparently 
something must
have gone awry during the extraction process.  I deleted the mplayer 
directory I had
created, re-created a new directory, then rextracted the mplayer file 
into the newly
created directory.  Did ./configure=> make=> makeinstall and all went 
well.  Sort of
anyway.  There were a few other minor problems but those have been 
worked out
as too.
