Well, I'm glad it's working OK, whatever it took! :)
That suid root vulnerability is a potential security risk, *if* you're
running your own ISP or have other users on the machine whom you can't
trust, for whatever reason. Other than that, it seems to have taken on
the scope of another urban legend. Running svgalib as my only graphics
display, anything using it (or anything requiring realtime scheduling)
has to be set uid root, so I ended up doing a lot of reading on it. The
consensus seemed to be that, for a single user machine, it's a
non-issue. Four years with no problems would seem to bear that out.
Oh well, I posted the above for anyone who may get spooked by these
dire warnings, and I hope it's taken in the spirit in which it's
intended.
