	Ah, some windows format?

	Mplayer can play the .avi file, right?   

	Does this produce a wav file for you?

	    mplayer -ao pcm -aofile foo.wav -vc null -vo null input.avi

	I tried that on an avi file I had around and it produced a 
	valid wav file that mp2enc accepted.
