Have your tried the crop function during initial recording? That would seem to 
save a lot of time and effort.

I am not an expert but I would try some of the 'video filters'

mplayer -vf cropdetect test.avi

This should give you a running recommendation on the command line.

Then enter the line on your recording command line:

mencoder ... -vf crop=640:480:0:0 -o test.avi

Also try:

mplayer -vf help test.avi

for further assistance.

Hope that helps out.

I may want some recommendations in the future about recording TV so perhaps 
you could put together a little list of recipes.
