[MPlayer-users] VOD and mplayer

We are currently suffering from the problem of not being able to
stream MPEG4/QuickTime content to users with mplayer. It works fine
to stream to QuickTime, but mplayer can't find a stream.

We think the problem is related to the fact that even though mplayer
support RTSP, it only support Live streaming (using SDP -- the
session description protocol). However, our streaming is done with
Video-on-Demand technology.

Here is the error that mplayer gives:

  Playing rtsp://hollywood.unizh.ch/PLAY/Channels/0008/de/QuickTime/Archive/03_11_04-08_24_27/Video200k/index.mov
Not a Realmedia rtsp url. Trying standard rtsp protocol.
  Connected to server: hollywood.unizh.ch
  This stream is non-cacheable
  Stream not seekable!
Failed to get a SDP description from URL "rtsp://hollywood.unizh.ch/PLAY/Channels/0008/de/QuickTime/Archive/03_11_04-08_24_27/Video200k/index.mov": cannot handle DESCRIBE response: RTSP/1.0 404 Not Found

So it seems that it's trying to use SDP, even though VoD does not use SDP.

Can we still use mplayer to stream the content at

  rtsp://hollywood.unizh.ch/PLAY/Channels/0008/de/QuickTime/Archive/03_11_04-08_24_27/Video200k/index.mov

(also accessible as rtsp-over-http)?

Any help greatly appreciated!
