In mplayer cd audio reading use libcdparanoia. So in fact it extract
audio data, but some drives performs rather poorly in this mode.
All you can do is trying a bigger cache (i sometimes use cache up to
16-20MB for scrathy cd's) and/or -ccda paranoia=0 wich can help also.
If all that fail just get a better drive ;)
