I used SuSE YAST as I had hoped this might resolve package issues. No I did 
not use --nodeps

I will do that. Many thanks. I was contemplating dumping SuSE because the 
pacakage and compiling thing is often a problem with SuSE and I am a bit app 
happy. Red Hat and Debian are much more consistent and standardised in their 
compiling I gather.
