[MPlayer-users] Won't run in slave mode

I'm trying to write a frontend in java, but for some reason mplayer doesn't switch into slave mode. (Well it did once or twice at the very start, but not anymore). I can send commands to stdin but these are the keyboard commands, not the slave commands ("p\n" will pause the video).
Anybody know something?
