[MPlayer-users] mencode -idx fails

I ripped and encoded a dvd a few days ago with mencode. It plays well in 
mplayer, but for some reason no index was created during the encode so I 
was forced to play it with the -idx option in order seek. It also fails 
to play in media player. Today I tried to fix the index by running 
mencode as per the docs:

mencode -idx inputfile.avi -ovc copy -oac copy -o outputfile.avi

This runs with no errors and creates the output file, but the index is 
not built within this file either.

What am I missing, any ideas. Thanks.
