No.
I did that (e.g. with ALSA "amixer set Capture 10%; amixer sset Line 
capture cap; amixer sset Mic capture nocap; amixer sset CD capture 
nocap").

Also, recording with arecord (ALSA) and rec (OSS) works.

Must be something else.
