If you can't find solution with MPlayer try transcode
(www.theorie.physik.uni-goettingen.de/~ostreich/transcode/)
I already made DVD from DV avi files (recorded by a digital camera) (Exactly
I was a problem that there was a noise instead of sound - I think this is my
fault (wrong audio format (not DVD compatible))).
Anyway I prefer MPlayer ;-) but if it is not suitable for you, try
transcode.
