Look at the slave option. With it, you can do almost anything you need (seek back/forward with different options, etc). I use it with success :)

Only thing I lack is a way to determine how long the movie/music is. Otherwise, you just need a decent parser and you're set.

  I'd like to write a front end (not for user interaction, but for control by 
  another program) to mplayer.

  I figure out that the easiest way to do this is through the text client 
  protocol, but it seems to lack commands for fast forwarding, positioning at a 
  specific location within the file, and the like. Is it that I've not looked 
  well and such functionality exists..or do I have to interface my front end in 
  C??
