Do you mean something like:

export REC_LEVEL=100 ?

If so, I just gave that a try, and no joy.  Is there perhaps another way to 
turn up 'REC_LEVEL'?  I didn;t see anything specific for this in 'aumix', 
other than cranking up the levels of the various input/outputs, and setting 
which one to record on.
