I'm having the same problem.
BTW, there is a program in mplayer which changes .vob subtitles into 
text-based ones, but I didn't manage to get it working. The build 
instructions where outdated last time I tried to compile it, as well.

Can the writer of the program give a small tutorial on how to do it?
I always get segfaults when I execute it.
Once we have the subtitles as text, it should be easy to change font, 
colour, size and so on.
