[MPlayer-users] MP4 file format

Hi,

I'd like to get rid of the (bbd) avi file format and start using the mp4
file format (I am not talking about the codecs!). One of the main
advantages should be the lack of a maximum file size.

So far I have found only one suite of programs that will produce mp4
files using Linux, mpeg4ip. I can't use it though, as my tv card is
mounted in a box without monitor or X installed. The mpeg4ip grabber
application depends on running a box with X installed as it has a
graphical ui and uses the X11 shared memory extension, so I cannot
redirect it to my desktop machine.

There is an alternative, and that means grabbing tv using mencoder with
the xvid codec (material encoded using the libavcodec mpeg4 codec
doesn't work together with mpeg4ip - I don't know why). Then split the
audio and video streams and have mpeg4ip combine it into a mp4 file. Of
course this is prone to synch errors and doesn't work for large files.
Besides that, it is very sensitive to segmentation faults.

So... I'd like to know if anyone else would like to use mp4 with linux,
or already does so, and if so, how, and if there are any plans to
include mp4 support into mencoder (which would be great, of course). For
the last option maybe some code from the mpeg4ip project could be
"borrowed" ;-)

Erik Slagter.
