I don't know what your video hardware is, but my TNT2 Vanta with the 
Nvidia proprietary driver doesn't seem to support brightness and 
contrast at all. I just get error messages on stdout when I use 3 and 4, 
so I use "-vop eq2", which doesn't seem to add too much CPU time. Since 
your interactive controls work, you may have a different problem.
