As I understand it, xine uses system clock to sync video and audio,
which leads to an imperfect synchronisation under some circumstances
(lousy audio hardware?).

mplayer uses the soundcard clock to sync video and audio, resulting
(theoretically) in perfect synchronisation, but this works only if the
soundcard driver correctly supports this synchronisation.

So mplayer depends on functions of the soundcard driver that xine (like
most other applications) doesn't use.
