Which window manager? Did you play around with -fsmode-dontuse?

For example, I am using larswm and full screen under this window manager
is broken since 0.90rc1 or so. However, it does work with
-fsmode-dontuse n, where n is an even number between 16 and 30.
Unfortunately, this option is ignored when givend in the config file.
You have to specify it on the command line.
