[MPlayer-users] mencoder seg violation on Debian: jpg -> avi

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here - trying to convert a collection
of jpg images into a slideshow movie (is this what the following
does?), but crashes:

   $ mencoder \*.jpg -v -mf on:fps=25 -o output.avi -ovc divx4 -v > LOG

   MMX2 supported but disabled
   can't open '/home/gjw/.mplayer/mencoder_codecs.conf': No such file or directory
   File not found: 'frameno.avi'
   : No such file or directory
   init_freetype
   Segmentation fault

This is under Debian using the supplied Debian packages for mencoder
et al.

Output in the LOG file is:
