Try using dd to cut a clip from the movie, and see if that's enough to 
at least show the problem.  E.g.,

# dd bs=1 count=1000000 if=RAIN.MOV of=rain.clip.mov

(Saves the first 1000000 octets from RAIN.MOV to rain.clip.mov.)
