[MPlayer-users] noise at beginning of mp3

Hi. 

mplayer outputs a short (0.5 seconds) noise  at the beginning of some
mp3s. It seems to have something to do with how the mp3 were
originally encoded. I know for instance that all mp3 encoded with
Itunes play correctly.

Is this a problem with a list of usual suspects or should I provide
more details about my setup? I tried googling this with no success.
