you may laugh, but asf is MUCH BETTER DESIGNED format than mov.

mov is a bloated thing with nonsense stuff like interactive menus,
transparent sprites, scaling inside the codec, VRML, runtime edit lists
(causing a-v desync), codec chaneg at any time in the middle of the video
stream and so on. while hacking qt DLL support i had the feeling that you
can implement MacOS 9 in a single .mov file...
actually there are no boundary between MacOS and quicktime media functions,
it's tightly mixed...  and teh quicktime4windows actually contains a half
macos emulator and running macos qt player recompiled for x86 cpu but
keeping the macos syscalls.

asf is m$ (it's bad), but anyway it was designed with error resistance, raw
seeking, reliable headers, simplicity in mind.

i think asf and mpeg-ps are the best formats now, all teh others (ogg, mov,
vivo, realmedia etc) are bloated crap.
