I receive exactly the same error:

Using pnm:// I receive many "Error while decoding frame"...

I don't think MPlayer parses SMIL files. Most likely, you will need to 
download the SMIL file, open it in a text editor and search for the 
video stream (usually with ".rm" or ".rmv" extension).
