what linux distribution do you use ? Which rpm version (rpm --version) ?

I found out that rpm 4.1 sometime hangs infinitely on my RH8 box. Maybe
you have the same problem. Rebooting (yeh, rebooting... didn't find any
other way :-/) solves it (temporarily) for me.
