More experiementation shows that "cant generate tables" pops up every
few frames during playback of AVI's. Example

Packages I've installed:

mplayer-common
mplayer-gui

lame-libs-3.93.1-1
lib-fame-0.9.0-1 (may be irrelevant?)
libpng2-1.0.9-1

mplayer-codecs-extralite

...all other dependencies were OK so I apparently had uptodate-enough
versions already. I already had a later version of libpng I think (? I
had a .so.3 and .so.2 was req'd), but it seemed OK when I added the one
above.

Runing as root or as ordinary user makes no difference - still get the
"cant generate tables" message.

I've also now noticed that when attempting to playback anything from
ordinary MP3's to MPEG's to AVI's, I get no sound (this is on a laptop
with integrated speakers; there's no independent volume or anything). No
idea whether that's a co-incidence (previously I'd only been trying to
get an mpgs to work, then got sidetracked by the fact that most had been
encoded with LMLM4 which mplayer doesn't support according to the LMC guys).

When I try to move the volume control in the GUI, it won't let me drag
it (just jumps back to zero by the looks of things).

Output from running against an ordinary MP3:

I'd already read FAQ and much of docs. As I said, couldn't find any
suggestions.
