I've tried that with things like videogame CDs, and the story is always
the same....  They'd be happy to replace it, just jump through these 500
hoops, and write us a check for more than it would cost to get it, new,
and we'll eventually get around to giving you a replacement.

There's no legal requirements for a corporation NOT to be hypocritical. 

I certainly agree that they should be required to provide a
nearly-free replacement, but that's not going to happen unless you are
willing to spend money on lawyers to get the case won in court.
