You can also use mencoder (not mplayer) like this:
$ mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -o /dev/null

It's faster, and it displays the number of frames, which
should always be correct.  Just divide it by 25 (PAL) or
30 (NTSC) to get the running time in seconds.
