I resend this post, I hope people don't receive it twice ....
Try adding -vobsubid option, something like

mplayer -vobsub the_tuxedo-001-sid01 -vobsubid 0 the_tuxedo-001.avi

You can look for the vobsubid numbers in the *idx file.
