Seems like "classical" ;-) case of overheated cpu.

Do your ever compile big stuff like a linux
kernel or the mplayer
source? Chances are it will happen then too. A
motherboard with
temperature sensors is your friend here ;-)

I compile big stuff all the time: mozilla from
the cvs tree compiles for 3 hours. Never noticed
signal 11's.
And BTW it happens without -ao pcm too...
